BRUSH PLACE

San Francisco, California

1990

The architect’s office is an assemblage of highly refined elements inserted into a former furniture factory. Galvanized steel shutters secure the space from the industrial neighborhood.  A sliding steel and glass door, full-height hot water radiators, a cylindrical aluminum conference room and drawing tables fabricated of Baltic birch plywood and galvanized steel combine in a play of materiality and function.

Jim Jennings’s studio transforms mundane materials into an elegant essay on abstraction.  His thoughtful, highly crafted expression of materials counters conventional prejudice with a serendipitous melding of art and technology.

Architecture 06/90

We awarded this project for the architect’s artful use of standard materials.  Although we saw many projects using a similar aesthetic, we felt this studio’s combination of refinement and directness of construction made it worthy of high honors.

I.D. 07/93 Annual Review: Best Environment

An architectural gem in its own right.
